President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta were among the top leaders who arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) early Thursday morning to receive the body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Ruto, who arrived shortly after 9:08 am, is leading the country’s leadership in welcoming the remains of the opposition leader who passed away on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment in India. His Deputy, Kithure Kindiki, was among the first senior government officials to reach the airport to oversee the final arrangements for the solemn reception.

Kenya Airways flight KQ203, carrying the body of the late leader, was given the special call sign RAO001 as it entered Kenyan airspace, a symbolic tribute to Odinga’s legacy and decades of service to the country.

The plane is expected to land around 9:30 am, marking a somber moment for the nation as Raila’s body returns home. A large crowd of dignitaries, government officials, and family members have gathered at the airport, representing both sides of Kenya’s political divide.

Among those present include National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, Homa Bay Governor Gladys, and several county chiefs.

Flags at JKIA and across the country continue to fly at half-mast following the mourning period announced by the President. Security at the airport has been intensified, with thousands of Kenyans expected to line the roads as the motorcade carrying the casket makes its way to the Lee Funeral Home.
