He threatened her with a knife before committing the act," the prosecution said.

A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of defiling a 14-year-old girl in Loitip Village, Kiserian Location, Baringo County.

The ruling was delivered at the Kabarnet Law Courts, where the prosecution, led by Counsel Collins Ogutu and Rebecca Bartilol, successfully proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

"On 9th of April 2024, at around 10 pm, the victim was at home with her younger siblings, who were asleep, when the defendant entered the premises. He threatened her with a knife before committing the act," the prosecution was quoted as saying by Citizen Digital.

The court heard from six prosecution witnesses, including the victim. Medical reports and other crucial evidence were presented to corroborate the defilement claims.

While delivering the sentence, magistrate Edwin Mulochi noted the violent nature of the offence and the psychological harm inflicted on the victim.

He emphasized the importance of deterrent sentencing, citing legal provisions that guide punishment for such crimes.

The judgment has been welcomed by local child rights advocates, who say it is a strong message that justice for minors must be swift and uncompromising.
