Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has issued a fierce rebuke against her successor, Governor Mutuma M'Ethingia, threatening to return him to the prisons where he once worked before she elevated him to deputy governor.

The fallout comes amid growing backlash after the county administration appointed well-known Meru businessman Alhaji Mwendia as county spokesperson on April 23, 2025—a move that also attracted criticism from lawyer Mugambi Imanyara.

Lawyer Mugambi Imanyara has sharply criticized the appointment of Alhaji Mwendia to a senior county position, arguing that he should not have been considered for any county office, citing factors such as his advanced age.

Imanyara further claimed that by handing Alhaji the role, Governor Mutuma M'Ethingia was effectively treating the county as his personal property.

"M'Ethingia (sic), I caution you — if I spot Alhaji driving a vehicle with county government plates, I will report you to the EACC and push for the immediate arrest of both you and Alhaji," Imanyara warned.

Former Governor Kawira Mwangaza backed these sentiments by reposting a video of Imanyara’s remarks on her Facebook page on Monday, April 28, 2025.

She fiercely criticized Governor Mutuma, vowing to take action that would see him sent back to prison.

In her fiery post, Kawira accused Mutuma of foolishness and made it clear that, unlike before when he oversaw prison operations as an officer, she was determined to have him return this time as an inmate, implying that legal proceedings against him were already underway.

"Bonoko, you will return to the prison where I took you from, not to guard inmates, but to be guarded. Traitor," she posted on Facebook.

Alhaji Mwendia, the newly appointed County Spokesperson and current Secretary General of the DEP (Mbus) Party in Meru County, assumed his new role just a day before Governor Mutuma presided over the swearing-in of the new County Executive Committee Members (CECMs).

Among those who took the oath of office were Isaac Kinoti Marete, who was assigned the Lands and Public Works portfolio; CPA Monica Kaithiori Kathono, appointed to lead the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning; and Dr. Dennis Muriungi Mugambi, who now heads the Department of Health Services.
