The Kenya Rugby Union KRU has announced the temporary suspension of all rugby-related activities across the country following the passing of the Rt. Honourable Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga.
In a statement dated 16th October 2025 and signed by Chief Executive Officer Thomas Odundo, the union directed all affiliates, clubs, associate members, and partners to halt rugby operations during the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by the Government of Kenya.
The directive follows similar ones put in place by football authorities as well as other sport federations as the country comes to terms with the passing of the former Prime Minister, who was a well known and widely accepted supporter of local football.
“Further to the unfortunate passing of the Rt. Honourable Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga and the subsequent declaration by the Government of the Republic of Kenya of seven (7) days of national mourning, the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) hereby directs the suspension of all rugby-related activities across the country during this period,” the statement read in part.
The union also expressed its solidarity with the nation during this difficult time, extending heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of the late statesman.
“The Kenya Rugby Union joins the nation in mourning and extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of the late Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga,” the statement continued.
The Impala Floodlit competition, which heralds the opening of the 15 a side season, was also earlier postponed, as KRU confirmed that normal rugby activities will resume after the seven day mourning period, as directed by government.
“We thank all affiliates and partners for their understanding and cooperation during this solemn time,” the CEO concluded.
Odinga will be buried Sunday at his Bondo home with activities set to take place around the country to ensure he receives a befitting sendoff.
