Raila Odinga’s body has been transferred from Nyayo Stadium to Lee Funeral Home on Friday evening, concluding the public viewing that marked the first stage of Kenya’s former Prime Minister’s state funeral.
The flag-covered casket left in a private hearse, flanked by military escorts, as security officers watched silently.
Earlier plans had indicated that the remains would spend the night at his Karen home. However, the ODM Party said the National Funeral Committee had revised the schedule, confirming the body would now be kept at Lee Funeral Home in preparation for Saturday’s funeral activities.
Nyayo Stadium had been filled to capacity throughout the day, with mourners lining up to pay their respects. The public viewing was extended to 5pm to allow more people to bid farewell to the leader affectionately known as Baba.
On Saturday, the body will be flown to Kisumu, where residents are expected to gather in large numbers to honour Odinga before his burial in Bondo on Sunday.
