The governor said Raila’s legacy would live far beyond politics, highlighting his unwavering dedication to democratic ideals and his vision for a just and united nation.

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has described the late Raila Odinga as a visionary leader whose courage and sacrifice transformed Kenya’s political landscape and inspired countless citizens across generations.

Addressing mourners during the memorial service at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, Nyong’o said Raila’s impact on the country’s democratic journey will remain etched in history.

He noted that only a handful of leaders have managed to inspire such deep loyalty, respect, and admiration from their people.

“Very few leaders have left a mark so indelible that generations will keep them with reverence. Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga is one such leader,” the governor said.

Nyong’o praised Raila’s lifelong commitment to justice and democracy, describing him as a leader who stood firmly with ordinary citizens in their quest for freedom and fairness.

“Wananchi for whom you have stood fighting over the years thronged Jomo Kenyatta Stadium–Mamboleo to celebrate your extraordinary life,” he said.

The governor said Raila’s legacy would live far beyond politics, highlighting his unwavering dedication to democratic ideals and his vision for a just and united nation.

“Jakom, you were truly the most consequential and a once-in-a-generation leader. You transcended politics, and your ideals, courage, and vision for a democratic Kenya will continue to guide and inspire generations for years to come,” Nyong’o added.

“Go well, Captain!” he concluded emotionally, as mourners broke into song and prayer to honour Raila’s memory.

The memorial was part of a series of nationwide mourning events following Raila’s death on October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India.

President William Ruto declared seven days of national mourning and announced that the former Prime Minister would be laid to rest with full military honours.

On Saturday, Raila’s body was flown to Kisumu, where thousands turned up to pay their last respects. From Kondele to Nyalenda, Kibuye to the central business district, crowds lined the streets, waving flags and chanting liberation songs in a moving show of affection for a man many regarded as the face of Kenya’s democracy.

According to Oburu Oginga, the burial will take place at the family’s Kang’o Ka Jaramogi home in Bondo after a night vigil at his Opoda residence.

Kisumu County Commissioner Omollo said security teams had been deployed to ensure calm and order during the events in Kisumu and Bondo, assuring that Raila’s sendoff would reflect the honour befitting a national hero.
