Comedian Eric Omondi has stepped in to lead a public fundraiser for singer and songwriter Mary Maina, popularly known as Marya, following a stroke that left one side of her body paralyzed.

On Monday, Omondi visited the singer at her home and made an emotional appeal to the public to support her financially.

He revealed that Marya is currently unable to walk or carry out any physical tasks, making it impossible for her to work or perform.

"Hey guys… This is Marya, our Beautiful Sister, who has entertained us for decades… She suffered a stroke and is unable to walk or perform any Physical duties. All her shows have been canceled, she is the mother of two Beautiful kids…She needs us…Her bills have piled…Please send whatever you can to her number 0719210779 (NAME: MARY MAINA) GOD BLESS YOU,” Omondi said.

His call for support has been echoed by fellow artist Avril, who shared a detailed update from Marya’s family through her Instagram page.

The message confirmed that Marya suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot, which restricted oxygen flow to her brain. Though she has since been discharged from hospital, her recovery remains challenging.

"A heartfelt thank you for the love, support and prayers you have extended towards Marya over the past week. As you know, she suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot that limited oxygen flow to the brain. She has since been discharged and is continuing her recovery at home. Physiotherapy is ongoing twice a day, and although the left side of her body remains unresponsive, we remain hopeful and encouraged by her strength," the message read.

Avril added that the family continues to rely on public support and appreciates every form of help extended to Marya.

"With that said, Marya and her family still need us. Please continue to support and reach out to her personally where possible. Every call, message, prayer or visit goes a long way," Avril said.

Marya became a household name in Kenya’s music scene through her work with the iconic Ogopa Deejays in the late 2000s and early 2010s. She is best known for hits like Hey Baby and Sishiki Simu, which showcased her unique voice and style.

In past interviews, Marya opened up about the struggles she faced after her early success. She said that her rapid rise to fame and lack of financial guidance led to a difficult path later in life.

"I became famous and got money at a very young age. The worst thing is I didn’t have anyone to guide me — to tell me to save, invest, or buy land. Suddenly, I was broke. It was a mistake. I was only 22 then, but I learnt my lesson," she once admitted.

"I tried working on projects, but I kept hitting a wall. Finances were the main issue. I didn’t have a manager, and managing myself was difficult," she added.

Now, as she focuses on her recovery, artists, fans, and friends are rallying around her, with hopes that public support will help her get through this difficult time.
