The individual, a civilian, was arrested on Wednesday after being tracked to a hideout in the Rift Valley town.

A suspect believed to be part of a gang that robbed a businessman of nearly Sh1 million moments after he left a bank in Parklands, Nairobi, has been apprehended in Eldoret.

The individual, a civilian, was arrested on Wednesday after being tracked to a hideout in the Rift Valley town.

Authorities also recovered several items believed to have been used in the heist, including a reflector jacket, a police headdress with a white cover, and a vehicle allegedly linked to the crime.

Investigators said the car had an additional number plate, suspected to have been used to throw off surveillance and avoid identification. The breakthrough came after detectives analyzed CCTV footage from the bank where the businessman had withdrawn Sh999,000.

According to police reports, the footage captured the suspect vehicle parked inside the bank’s premises. It was later spotted trailing the victim as he left the bank on Saturday, June 28, around 2 p.m. Upon reaching a junction along First Parklands Avenue, the suspect vehicle blocked the businessman’s car.

Two assailants, one disguised in a police outfit and another in a reflector jacket, reportedly jumped out, seized the car keys, and made away with the envelope containing the cash. One of the attackers was armed with a pistol and allegedly struck the victim on the head, forcing him to surrender.

The stolen funds have not yet been recovered. The arrested suspect has since been transported to Nairobi for further interrogation, while detectives continue the hunt for additional suspects and the firearm used during the robbery.

The victim had placed the money under the co-driver’s seat after making the withdrawal. As he prepared to drive home, the attackers pounced, fleeing in a salon car toward Limuru Road. He later filed a report with police, prompting an intensive investigation.

This incident is part of a troubling trend in which victims are targeted shortly after leaving financial institutions. Authorities now suspect insider collusion, with rogue bank staff tipping off criminal gangs.

Similar incidents have been reported across Nairobi in recent months. Just last month, Sh7 million was stolen from a man after a bank visit in the CBD.

In February, a woman was ambushed and lost Sh3.6 million outside a petrol station on Lungalunga Road. Earlier in January, a businessman in Kitengela was robbed of Sh1.8 million after parking at a hotel post-withdrawal.

Investigators warn that organized criminal networks are leveraging information leaks from within banks to identify and track potential victims. They’re urging financial institutions to strengthen internal controls and improve client security protocols.
