In Summary

Matiang’i, who previously held top roles in government as a technocrat, is making his first attempt at elective politics.

Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has said he is still in consultation with political leaders across the country and is yet to decide on the political party he will use to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday night, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary explained that committing to a single political party at this point would limit the broad engagement he is currently pursuing with various groups.

“I think if I made a choice now and stuck to one political party, I will disadvantage others with whom I’m having discussions,” he said.

Matiang’i noted that his plan is to bring together a coalition of like-minded parties, rather than rely on a single party ticket. He said that Kenya’s multiparty political system remains the chosen path for most citizens and must be embraced when building political alliances.

“The reality is that we chose democracy and we have many political parties. In Kenya, we have over 89 political parties and that’s how Kenyans want to organise their politics for the time being.”

While several parties, including Jubilee and UPA have already declared support for his presidential bid, Matiang’i maintained that such expressions are part of a broader national dialogue aimed at forming a strong coalition.

“In fact, this afternoon I’m meeting another political party that is asking whether we can work together, and I have been asked this by seven or eight political parties.”

“It’s flattering that you have political leaders, so many political leaders sitting down in their executive committees and saying maybe Fred Matiang’i should be our candidate even before I ask them. I don’t want to close the door on anyone; I want to have very comprehensive, inclusive, exhausting discussions with everyone, then we come together and work on a coalition.”

Matiang’i, who previously held top roles in government as a technocrat, is making his first attempt at elective politics.

He is widely known for his firm leadership style and reformist approach during his time in public office.

However, critics have raised concerns about his past enforcement methods and questioned his ability to appeal to a diverse, national voter base.

His transition from a career civil servant to a leading presidential contender has stirred both support and scrutiny. As he works to position himself as a unifying figure, Matiang’i has made it clear that coalition-building, consultation, and inclusivity will shape his campaign.
