The senators demanded that the State Department for Gender and the National Gender and Equality Commission urgently provide medical, psychological, and protective support to all survivors.

Women senators have condemned the sexual violence inflicted on women and girls during the June 25 protests, calling it a grave violation that must be urgently addressed.

Through a statement issued on Thursday,  the Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) said survivors of these attacks deserve justice, care, and protection, and issued four demands to government agencies and support partners.

“The women of Kenya wish to condemn, in the strongest terms, the senseless violence witnessed during the protests held on 25th June, 2025 that led to fatalities, grievous bodily harm, other injuries, rape and molestation of innocent women and girls, and arsonist attacks on businesses, government installations and key infrastructure,” read part of the statement.

KEWOSA said reports of rape and molestation have emerged from various locations where protests took place, with some of the incidents being celebrated by those responsible on social media.

“We particularly decry the violence that was meted out on women and girls, including acts of sexual violence, which unfortunately are being celebrated by the perpetrators and other members of the public on social media,” the senators said.

Their statement followed online outrage after one alleged assault incident was posted on X by an individual who bragged about the attack, drawing public fury and calls for arrest.

The senators demanded that the State Department for Gender and the National Gender and Equality Commission urgently provide medical, psychological, and protective support to all survivors.

They also called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to launch urgent and thorough investigations into all reported incidents of sexual violence during the protests. Further, they asked the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to move with speed to ensure those responsible are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The fourth demand was directed at legal and medical aid partners, who were urged to step in and assist victims in their recovery and pursuit of justice.

The June 25 demonstrations were held to honour the memory of 60 protesters killed in the 2024 anti-finance bill protests, but ended in violence. At least 16 people were reported dead and over 400 injured in Wednesday’s unrest, in what KEWOSA called a tragic irony.
