US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin ended their Alaska summit without securing a ceasefire in Ukraine, leaving the war unresolved despite hours of talks.

The two leaders met for nearly three hours in Anchorage and later issued brief joint remarks before leaving without taking questions from the press.

Trump admitted that the discussions did not produce a breakthrough. “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” he said, acknowledging that no agreement had been reached.

Although Trump spoke of “some great progress,” he gave no details, saying only, “We didn’t get there.” He then exited the stage without answering questions from the hundreds of journalists who had gathered.

Observers noted that Trump’s failure to secure a deal would hurt his image as a peacemaker, especially after earlier promises that the summit had only a 25% chance of failure. The president had also threatened tougher sanctions on Russia if no ceasefire was reached.

However, in a later interview with Fox News, he gave a vague timeline, saying he would consider sanctions “maybe in two weeks, three weeks.”

Putin appeared confident during the joint appearance, opening with lengthy remarks while Trump stood silently.

The Russian leader even hinted at hosting the next meeting in Moscow, though there was no indication that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would be invited.

For many in Ukraine, the lack of a deal was a relief, as it avoided concessions that could have cost them territory.

Still, Putin reiterated that only addressing the “root causes” of the conflict would bring lasting peace ,  a statement seen as his continued determination to dismantle Ukraine’s independence.

The outcome left questions about the next steps. With Russia’s attacks continuing and Western warnings repeatedly unfulfilled, many Ukrainians fear that the Anchorage summit will be seen by Moscow as a signal to press on with the war.
