Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee will be out of action for an extended period with a hamstring injury that could mean he misses the rest of the season.

The Netherlands international, 23, limped off in the second half of Sunday's 4-1 defeat at Newcastle and has been undergoing tests to determine the extent of the injury, which left United boss Ruben Amorim crossing his fingers.

Head coach Ruben Amorim will address the issue when he speaks on Wednesday before the crucial Europa League match against Lyon at Old Trafford but multiple sources indicated to BBC Sport that here is some doubt over whether Zirkzee can feature again this season owing to the severity of the injury.

The news arrives as a blow to Amorim before Thursday's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon, with the tie evenly-poised at 2-2.

They will likely lean on Rasmus Hojlund to get them goals in the absence of the dependable Zirkzee.

Zirkzee, who has scored seven goals for United since he arrived from Bologna in the summer, started at Newcastle, having scored in the first-leg draw at Lyon before he limped off.

United have six Premier League games left, with their final one against Aston Villa on 25 May.

If United reach the Europa League final, they will play in Bilbao, Spain, on 21 May.

Currently 14th in English Premier League the Europa is their only genuine chance at silverware this season and as well it represents a chance to qualify for next season's Champions League.
