Liverpool smash club record to land Florian Wirtz

Wirtz, a standout attacking midfielder, has committed to a five-year contract at Anfield, joining compatriot Jeremie Frimpong—another summer capture from Leverkusen.
Liverpool have confirmed the signing of 22-year-old German playmaker Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a groundbreaking transfer worth up to £116 million—a new British and club record.
Wirtz, a standout attacking midfielder, has committed to a five-year contract at Anfield, joining compatriot Jeremie Frimpong—another summer capture from Leverkusen.
The base fee is £100 million, with up to £16 million in add-ons, eclipsing Darwin Núñez’s £85 million move from 2022, making him Liverpool’s most expensive signing ever.
Wirtz arrives after an extraordinary spell at Leverkusen, where he scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 matches and was a key figure in their unbeaten 2023–24 Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double.
Internationally, he has won 31 caps for Germany, featuring at Euro 2024 and the Nations League.
Speaking at the club launch, Wirtz said, “I feel very happy and very proud… I want to win everything every year,” highlighting his ambition to replicate Liverpool’s recent Premier League and Champions League successes.
This move reinforces Liverpool’s transfer strategy under sporting director Richard Hughes and coach Arne Slot, who aim to replicate the transformative impacts of past record signings like Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.
It also paves the way for Darwin Núñez’s expected departure, which could help balance the books.
At just 22, Wirtz is seen as a generational talent capable of shaping Liverpool’s midfield and spearheading their quest for further domestic and European silverware.
