Kenya is set to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with the Cabinet confirming that final preparations are underway, marking the country’s return to hosting a major continental football event after more than 40 years.
The announcement was made during a Cabinet briefing held on Tuesday, July 29, where it was noted that Kenya last hosted a continental sporting event during the 1987 All-Africa Games.
The confirmation marks a milestone for Kenya’s sporting calendar and positions the country as a regional hub for major tournaments.
The Harambee Stars are currently in full residential camp ahead of the tournament, under the guidance of a newly appointed technical team.
The national team has been grouped in Pool A alongside Angola, DR Congo, Morocco, and Zambia.
President William Ruto recently visited the team at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, where he encouraged the players as they prepare for the tournament.
His presence was viewed as a major morale boost for the squad, which is determined to deliver a strong performance at home.
In parallel with the team’s preparations, the government has prioritised upgrading infrastructure and enhancing security at the designated venues.
Both Nyayo and Kasarani stadia have been approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following significant upgrades that include installation of CCTV systems, Venue Operating Centres, and improved access control mechanisms.
Security arrangements have also been finalised, with police and National Youth Service officers deployed as stewards. These officers have undergone CAF-sanctioned training to ensure the safety of fans, players, and officials throughout the tournament.
According to the government, Kenya is ready to stage a safe, successful and memorable CHAN 2024, in a move aimed at restoring the country’s reputation as a trusted host of international sports competitions.
Officials say the tournament will not only boost Kenya’s sporting image but also serve as a symbol of the country's readiness to manage global events.
