The first round first leg matches in the CAF Confederations Cup took place over the weekend, with teams battling it out for any form of advantage across the African continent, in club football's second tier competition.

A weekend of tight margins and big statements saw home upsets, derby drama and valuable away goals banked, ahead of next week’s returns.

In an East African context, Kenya and Uganda met in the first round of the preliminary rounds, with NEC hosting Nairobi United Saturday evening. It ended in a 2-2 draw in Kampala. Azam and Singida Black Stars from Tanzania also managed wins versus their opening round opponents ahead of the return legs this weekend.

Azam beat El Merreikh Bentiu from South Sudan 2-0 away from home, while Singida beat off Rayon Sports from Rwanda 1-0.
