The government has pledged to support the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) in enhancing its sports infrastructure, including plans to build a new stadium and establish a sports academy aimed at nurturing talent, expanding sports disciplines, and creating more job opportunities.

The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru on Thursday, October 9, 2025, where the government honored Kenya Prisons Service athletes for their exemplary performances over the past year.

Speaking during the ceremony, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi said the Ministry of Sports, through collaboration with the State Department for Correctional Services, will prioritize the development of sports facilities and programs within the service to strengthen Kenya’s sports ecosystem.

“The plan includes the development of a sports stadia in one of its facilities, improvement of existing infrastructure, as well as the possibility of establishing a sports academy,” he said.

He commended the Kenya Prisons Service for its consistent contribution to the country’s sports success, noting that it has played a crucial role in identifying and nurturing top athletic talent over the years.

“We gather here to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship not only in KPS, but the entire country. We acknowledge the great role that KPS plays in Kenya’s sporting sphere,” the PS said.

Correctional Services Principal Secretary, Salome Beacco, who also attended the event, emphasized that the collaboration between her department and the Ministry of Sports would elevate the standards of sports within the Kenya Prisons Service.

She said the government plans to expand the number of sports disciplines from the current 13 to accommodate more talent and ensure Kenya Prisons continues to bring glory to the nation at both regional and international levels.

“Plans are underway to expand the number of sports disciplines from the current 13 to ensure that the service brings more glory to the country in both regional and international sports events,” Beacco said.

She added that her office will fully support athletes and their coaches to enhance performance standards within the service.

Beacco also revealed that KPS intends to establish a “hall of fame” to showcase the achievements of both current and retired athletes who have brought pride to the service and the nation.

Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh praised both active and retired KPS athletes for their contributions to the country’s sporting success, particularly those who excelled at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

He reaffirmed the service’s commitment to supporting sportsmen and women, saying Kenya Prisons would remain a strong pillar in national sports development.
