Marathoner Albert Korir has withdrawn from the Boston Marathon, that is due to take place on Easter Monday.

Korir, who has previously won the Vienna, Ottawa and New York Marathons announced on his social media pages that he will not take part in this year's edition.

He finished fourth and fifth in the last two editions of the marathon and had been hoping to compete for top honours this year but it seems that an ankle injury has taken him out of the race this year.

"It’s with pain in my heart (and ankle) that I won’t be competing in Boston on Monday. The hard work has been put into it, but unfortunately, I badly twisted my ankle last Saturday during my last fartlek," he posted.

"It’s been a tough decision to make. But being in Boston and competing with the best is only possible when you’re 100% physically okay. Thanks, Boston Marathon, for the trust in me year after year."

"Success to all other champions who will compete on Monday. Will be cheering you from home. I’ll be back," added.

Evans Chebet, John Korir and Cyprian Kotut, Daniel Mateiko, Abel Kipchumba and Wesley Kiptoo will represent the country at the marathon.

Ethiopia's Sisey Lemma will defend the title he won last year.

Kenya's Hellen Obiri won the women's crown and will also participate this year.
