Microsoft has announced that it will stop providing free updates and support for Windows 10 users by October 14, 2025.

This means businesses and individuals using the operating system will need to either pay for extended services or upgrade to Windows 11.

In an update on Tuesday, the tech company clarified that while Windows 10 will still function after the deadline, computers using it will become more vulnerable to security threats.

"As of October 14, 2025, computers running on Windows 10 will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, feature updates, and security updates or fixes," the company stated.

Microsoft advised users to switch to a supported version of Windows to avoid security risks.

"We recommend you transition to a version of Windows that is still supported," the company said.

"If your existing device cannot run Windows 11, a new PC that can run Windows 11 makes for an easy transition and great experience."

Windows 10 was introduced in Kenya in July 2015 as part of a global release, replacing Windows 8.1, which had been launched in 2013. The most recent version, Windows 11, was released in October 2021.

Microsoft has indicated that some older PCs will not meet the requirements for upgrading to Windows 11, meaning users may need to purchase new computers.

"If your PC meets the minimum system requirements and can upgrade, you should see an option in 'Windows Update' to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free," Microsoft said in a statement on its official website.

The company described Windows 11 as its most secure operating system, offering enhanced security features.

"Windows 11 is the most secure Windows ever built, with comprehensive end-to-end security that covers antivirus, firewall, Internet protections, and more. This means more security features, dashboard displays, and ongoing updates to help safeguard against future threats–all built-in at no extra cost," it commented.

In July last year, Microsoft systems experienced a major global outage, affecting key industries such as aviation, banking, healthcare, and financial services, highlighting the importance of timely software updates and support.
