Snapchat has launched a new app for the Apple Watch, allowing users to send and receive messages directly from their wrists.

The move brings the popular platform’s fast-paced messaging experience to smartwatches, even as other major tech companies pull away from the wearable space.

The app, announced last week, is designed for what Snapchat describes as “micro-connections.” It lets users view incoming chats and respond without needing to take out their phones.

Replies can be sent using a small keyboard, emojis, voice dictation, or Scribble.

Unlike the full version of the app on phones, users won’t be able to take selfies, access the camera, or view stories from the watch.

The watch app focuses entirely on messaging.

"We know people want to stay in touch, whether they’re commuting, at the gym, or in a meeting," a Snap spokesperson said.

"This version makes it easier to keep conversations flowing, no matter where you are."

Snapchat’s launch stands out at a time when companies like Instagram and Uber have exited the smartwatch space, citing low engagement.

Snap, however, is betting that users still want fast and subtle ways to stay connected.

To use the app, users need an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer, running watchOS 9 or later.

The watch must also be paired with the latest Snapchat app on iPhone.
