Somaliland opens mission in Nairobi

The event, held on Thursday, was attended by senior Kenyan leaders and members of the international community, including delegates from Somaliland.
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi has opened the Republic of Somaliland’s Mission office in Nairobi, just two days after the Kenyan government stopped the planned launch of a Liaison Office.
The event, held on Thursday, was attended by senior Kenyan leaders and members of the international community, including delegates from Somaliland.
Among the Kenyan leaders present were Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii and Marsabit Senator Mohamed Said Chute.
The Mission office will represent Somaliland in Kenya, with its roles including trade and investment, consular services, political engagement, and support for the Somaliland community.
The launch comes shortly after Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs halted the planned opening of the Somaliland Liaison Office, which was scheduled for Tuesday, May 27.
In a statement issued on Monday evening, the ministry said the move could not proceed because Kenya recognises the Federal Government of Somalia.
"The Ministry further notes with concern that to the extent the event of May 27 has not been approved by this Ministry, its investiture of the status of a Diplomatic Office does not enjoy the imprimatur of the Republic of Kenya and cannot be allowed to proceed," the statement read in part.
Despite the directive, Somaliland went ahead with the inauguration of the Mission office.
Ex-leaders and stakeholders from Somaliland described the move as a key step in building its diplomatic presence in the region.
The development could trigger diplomatic tension, as Kenya has restated its recognition of the Federal Government of Somalia as the only legitimate authority over Somali territories, including Somaliland. Somalia may view the move as a challenge to its sovereignty.
