At least 21 athletes from Kano State have died in a road crash after their bus plunged off a bridge in Kura Local Government Area while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The bus, which was carrying 35 passengers on May 31, 2025, mostly athletes and officials, was involved in the accident before reaching its destination.

A senior official confirmed that the vehicle belonged to the Kano State Sports Commission.

"The athletes were traveling in a Kano State Sports Commission bus when it flipped off the bridge," said Umar Faggie, chairman of the state’s sports commission, in a phone call with Anadolu.

Survivors of the crash have been taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed sorrow over the loss, describing the athletes as dedicated and full of promise.

"I am heartbroken by news of the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 21 Kano State athletes returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta," he said in a statement on Saturday.

"These young men and women who have been cut in their prime represent the very best of our nation, dedicated, talented, and full of promise. Their untimely passing is a profound loss not only to their families and the people of Kano but to the entire country."

He called the incident a national tragedy and urged for stronger transport safety standards, especially during long-distance trips involving athletes and national teams.

"It is imperative that we put in place and enforce safety measures to stem accidents and prevent loss of lives," Atiku said.

The National Sports Festival is a major event in Nigeria that brings together athletes from different states.

It promotes unity, sporting development, and excellence through competitions in athletics, football, volleyball, basketball and other sports.
