In Summary

The incident left State Representative Melissa Hortman, 55, and her husband dead after they were attacked in their Brooklyn Park residence.

The suspect linked to Saturday’s shooting of two Minnesota lawmakers is reportedly employed by a private security firm that claims he has international field experience.

The incident left State Representative Melissa Hortman, 55, and her husband dead after they were attacked in their Brooklyn Park residence.

In a separate but related incident in Champlin, State Senator John Hoffman, 60, and his wife were also shot in their home. Both are now recovering after undergoing surgery.

Governor Tim Walz condemned the attacks, calling them a “deliberate act of political violence.”

Authorities have identified 57-year-old Vance Boelter as the prime suspect. He is still on the run, and a major manhunt is underway across the Minneapolis area to locate him.

According to the website of Praetorian Guard Security Services, the suspect, Vance Boelter, serves as the company’s director of security patrols, while his wife holds the position of president and CEO.

The site claims Boelter has operated in high-risk security environments across Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East including the West Bank, Gaza, and Southern Lebanon and North America.

It describes him as bringing a “strong security foundation,” shaped by both real-world fieldwork and training from private firms as well as individuals affiliated with the U.S. military.

The company's leadership also features a training manager who is identified as a retired undercover officer. Praetorian did not immediately respond to media inquiries.

Authorities revealed that when police arrived at Representative Hortman’s residence, they encountered a dark SUV outfitted with police lights.

A man dressed like a law enforcement officer reportedly opened fire on Brooklyn Park officers before fleeing the scene.

The Praetorian website also claims Boelter has worked for major international companies, including the world’s largest food corporation based in Switzerland and the top global convenience retailer headquartered in Japan.

These details match information on a LinkedIn profile under Boelter’s name and image, which lists roles as a supervisor at Nestlé and general manager at 7-Eleven.

Notably, the profile does not mention the Praetorian Guard or any military background. It instead lists his current role as CEO of Red Lion Group in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Minnesota Star Tribune also referenced a two-year-old video that appears to show Boelter preaching in Congo, telling a church audience, “I met Jesus when I was 17 years old and I gave my life to him.”

Boelter’s LinkedIn profile states he holds a doctorate in leadership and a Master of Science in management from Cardinal Stritch University, along with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations from St. Cloud State University.
