Toddler among seven dead in India helicopter crash

The tragedy follows another devastating incident just days earlier, where at least 279 people perished after a passenger aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood in Ahmedabad, a city in western India.
Seven people, including a toddler, lost their lives on Sunday when a helicopter transporting Hindu pilgrims from a Himalayan shrine went down in India, according to officials.
The tragedy follows another devastating incident just days earlier, where at least 279 people perished after a passenger aircraft crashed into a residential neighborhood in Ahmedabad, a city in western India.
In the latest crash, all six passengers and the pilot died when their helicopter crashed while flying from the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand State, disaster response official Nandan Singh Rajwar confirmed to AFP.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described the incident as “very sad” and confirmed that rescue teams had been sent to the crash site.
District tourism officer Rahul Chaubey indicated that poor weather conditions were likely to have caused the crash.
Kedarnath temple, located at an altitude of 3,584 meters (11,759 feet), draws thousands of pilgrims each summer, when access becomes possible.
To cater to affluent devotees who wish to avoid the demanding trek, numerous helicopter charter companies now operate in the region.
This latest tragedy comes just weeks after another fatal helicopter crash claimed six lives on the same route to the sacred site.
