The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has approved murder charges against six individuals, including three police officers, over the death of blogger and teacher Albert Omondi Ojwang.

The suspects, among them OCS Samson Kiprotich Talaam, are expected to be arraigned at the High Court in Kibera to face murder charges under Section 204 of the Penal Code.

In a statement released on June 23, 2025, the ODPP said the Director of Public Prosecutions had on June 10 instructed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.

The directive was issued under Article 157(4) of the Constitution and Section 5(2) of the ODPP Act.

IPOA submitted its findings on June 22, following which the DPP formed a team of senior prosecutors to assess the inquiry file. After reviewing the evidence, the DPP approved the prosecution of all six suspects.

The suspects named are police officers Samson Kiprotich Talaam, constable James Mukhwana, and Peter Kimani, as well as civilians John Ngige Gitau, Gin Ammitou Abwao, and Brian Mwaniki Njue.

The ODPP reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and the fair administration of justice, saying the decision was made in the public interest and in line with constitutional values.

“It assured the public that justice for Albert Omondi Ojwang will be pursued in accordance with legal procedures,” the statement read.

This development comes just days after the Milimani Law Courts ordered that constable James Mukhwana be detained for 21 days to allow for investigations into Ojwang’s death.

Senior principal magistrate Robinson Ondieki ruled on June 13 that the detention period would include weekends and public holidays.
