According to the police, creating false reports and staging abductions are criminal offences that not only distort facts but also harm the credibility of law enforcement and fuel unnecessary public anxiety.

Blogger Ndiang'ui Kinyagia has been summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters to record a statement following his sudden reappearance weeks after being reported missing, a disappearance that triggered widespread public concern and accusations against the police.

The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement issued Thursday, said Kinyagia remains a person of interest and is required to assist with ongoing investigations.

His court appearance earlier that day came after days of intense speculation about his whereabouts, with activists and social media users alleging that he had been abducted by security agencies.

NPS, however, has dismissed those claims as untrue and misleading, stating that the blogger was never in their custody.

“The Service reiterates its earlier response that Ndiangui Kinyagia was not in police custody. We take great exception to the emerging trend whereby individuals feign abduction and provide false information to the police, intending to generate a misleading narrative that exploits public outrage and sensational headlines,” the police statement read.

According to the police, creating false reports and staging abductions are criminal offences that not only distort facts but also harm the credibility of law enforcement and fuel unnecessary public anxiety.

“These criminal acts undermine the integrity of our law enforcement efforts, damage the reputation of the National Police Service, and cause anxiety to the public,” the statement added.

Kinyagia’s reappearance came after nearly two weeks of silence, with his family and supporters fearing for his safety. He resurfaced at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on Thursday, accompanied by his lawyer Wahome Thuku.

Thuku, speaking in court, said the blogger had gone into hiding out of fear for his life after learning that DCI officers were seeking him over unspecified criminal allegations.

“Ndiangui has indicated that he is ready and willing to present himself to the DCI and to be presented before any court of law when his safety and security are guaranteed. We have therefore advised him to present himself before the High Court at Milimani Law Courts today,” Thuku told the court.

The police have maintained that Kinyagia should now report to the DCI headquarters to facilitate investigations, even as questions continue to swirl around the circumstances of his disappearance and resurfacing.
