AMREF confirms fatal Mwihoko crash, says plane was en route to Somalia

AMREF Flying Doctors has confirmed that one of its aircraft, a Cessna, was involved in a fatal crash in Mwihoko, Nairobi, while en route to Somalia on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
The aircraft took off from Nairobi's Wilson at 2 pm heading to Hargeisa, Somalia, when it crashed in Mwihoko, Nairobi.
"AMREF Flying Doctors confirms that one of its aircraft, Cessna Citation XLS, registration 5Y-FDM, was involved in a fatal accident today. The aircraft took off from Wilson at 1417hrs en route to Hargeisa, Somalia and crashed at Mwihoko area, Nairobi," said the rescue organization in a statement.
AMREF did not specify the number of fatalities but said it’s cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation.
Speaking at the scene on Thursday, 7, 2025, Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula confirmed that the crash left six people dead while several others have been hospitalized.
"We have already evacuated the seriously injured to hospital," said Wafula.
Amateur footage from the scene captured multiple security agencies, including police and military personnel, involved in the rescue operation.
Firefighters from the Kenya Defence Forces and the Kiambu County fire department worked jointly to extinguish the blaze that broke out upon impact.
"At this time, we are cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation," said AMREF.
It added that its immediate focus is on the safety and well-being of those on board and providing full support to their families and colleagues, adding that further information will be provided as soon as it is confirmed.
"We are also offering all necessary assistance to the authorities as investigations continue," it added.
"We respectfully ask for patience and understanding as we manage this evolving situation with care and accuracy."
