Ruto said it was time for the country to face corruption head-on

President William Ruto has sent a strong message to government agencies, warning them not to take part in or protect corrupt activities.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 13, during the Devolution Conference in Homa Bay County, Ruto said it was time for the country to face corruption head-on. He described the vice as a major obstacle to Kenya’s progress and urged accountability bodies to play their part without fear or favour.

The President singled out the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), telling them they have no excuse for failing to act. “EACC must take its work seriously.

There will be no sacred cows and no phone calls from above to stop the prosecution of corruption cases,” Ruto said. “All agencies must work together to make sure public resources are used as the people intended.”

Ruto also criticized the use of anticipatory bail, calling it a legal loophole that helps suspects escape justice. “It’s a Kenyan invention that takes us backwards.

Someone can steal public money, run to court, and get anticipatory bail. That makes it impossible to prosecute them. How does that help the fight against corruption?” he asked, urging the judiciary to review the practice.

The President further took aim at parliament, claiming that some committees were demanding bribes from Cabinet ministers, governors, and other officials who appear before them. “It’s wrong for parliamentary committees to ask for money in exchange for writing favorable reports or ignoring wrongdoing in national and county governments,” he said.

Ruto, who recently signed the Conflict of Interest Bill into law, called for unity among all arms of government in fighting corruption. He said the judiciary should not become a safe haven for corrupt individuals hiding behind court decisions. “I urge the judiciary not to be a hiding place for corruption,” he stated.

The Devolution Conference, themed “For the People, For Prosperity: Devolution as a Catalyst for Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice”, has drawn leaders from across the country. The President’s remarks come at a time when Kenyans continue to demand stronger action against misuse of public resources.
