IGAD said the report offers insights into labour migration, remittance flows, forced displacement, and demographic changes within member states including Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) will on September 4, 2025, release a new report capturing migration patterns, displacement, and labour mobility across its member states, providing governments and development partners with fresh data to guide policy and planning.

The second edition of the IGAD Population and Migration Statistics Report, covering the period from 2010 to 2022, will be launched in Mombasa, Kenya.

Developed in partnership with GIZ and Statistics Sweden, the publication expands on the first edition, presenting a broader analysis of the factors driving population movements and their socio-economic impacts.

IGAD said the report offers insights into labour migration, remittance flows, forced displacement, and demographic changes within member states including Kenya, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.

The bloc noted that these countries continue to serve as countries of origin, transit and destination for labour migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, returnees and stateless populations.

The Authority stressed the central role of reliable statistics in addressing migration challenges, stressing that strong data governance is key to effective management.

“Migration and displacement shape the future of our region. From labour migration to forced displacement, remittances to demographic shifts—robust data is the key to informed policies and sustainable solutions,” IGAD said ahead of the launch.

The unveiling will be presided over by IGAD’s Deputy Executive Secretary, Mohamed Abdi Ware, and attended by senior representatives from member states and development partners.

The organisation said the report will reinforce the region’s role in global migration discussions while highlighting the need for evidence-based responses to strengthen sustainable solutions.

In addition to the report launch, IGAD is preparing to take an active role in the upcoming Africa Climate Summit 2 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu will lead the delegation, where he is expected to engage with governments, the African Union and international partners to advance the region’s climate agenda.

IGAD said its participation will reaffirm its commitment to resilience, adaptation and sustainable development.

The organisation will host a Pavilion at the Summit to facilitate policy dialogue, knowledge exchange and regional cooperation.

Side events will focus on the blue economy, drought resilience, climate applications, food security and water resource management.

“Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, and for the IGAD region, it is an existential issue. The Africa Climate Summit is an opportunity to amplify our collective voice, forge stronger partnerships, and deliver solutions that ensure resilience and prosperity for our people,” Gebeyehu said.
