Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit on Sunday welcomed the landmark decision by Britain, Canada, and Australia to formally recognize the State of Palestine, calling it a significant step toward justice and regional peace.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Aboul-Gheit hailed the move as one that “corrects a historical error that has persisted for years.”

He emphasized that the recognition aligns with the values and demands of citizens in these countries who have consistently supported the Palestinian right to self-determination and dignity.

“We anticipate more impactful international recognitions soon,” he added, expressing hope that this diplomatic momentum will encourage other nations to follow suit.

The coordinated announcements came earlier on Sunday, starting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who confirmed in a video statement that the United Kingdom “formally recognises the State of Palestine.”

He framed the decision as a push to revive the stalled two-state solution, which has long been considered the most viable path to lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

Australia echoed the sentiment in a joint statement issued by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong, stating: “Australia recognises the legitimate and long-held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own.”

The statement reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to a two-state solution as “the only path to enduring peace and security for the Israeli and the Palestinian people.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also joined in, confirming Canada’s formal recognition of the State of Palestine, further solidifying what many see as a growing international shift in support of Palestinian statehood.

The Arab League’s endorsement of these recognitions is likely to energize diplomatic efforts in the Middle East and could pressure additional Western nations to reconsider their positions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
