Musk announces Starlink launch in Somalia

The announcement marks a significant step forward in expanding internet connectivity across the Horn of Africa.
SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, is now operational in Somalia, according to a statement made by Elon Musk on social media platform X on Sunday.
The announcement marks a significant step forward in expanding internet connectivity across the Horn of Africa.
Confirming the development, Somalia’s Ministry of Telecommunications revealed that Starlink has officially been granted a license to operate in the country.
"We have been engaged in discussions with Starlink for the past two and a half years. The license was issued today," said Mustafa Yasiin, the ministry’s director of communication, in a video shared by the state news agency SONNA on Facebook.
Yasiin expressed optimism that Starlink's entry into the Somali market would enhance the quality of internet services currently available.
He noted that the satellite technology has the potential to provide faster and more reliable connectivity across the country.
He further emphasized that one of the key benefits of the partnership is reaching underserved and remote communities, where traditional infrastructure is limited.
With Starlink’s low-orbit satellites, the government hopes to bridge the digital divide and bring more equitable access to the internet.
