Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has cautioned Kenyans against falling for the growing trend of glorifying military regimes in Africa, warning that such systems of rule do not offer the freedoms and stability that come with democratic governance.

Speaking during a funeral service in Soy, Uasin Gishu County, for Rev. Mildred Ayiemba Wanyama—mother to football stars McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama—Mudavadi said social media has played a big role in misleading young people about the reality of life under military rule.

“Let me make it clear military takeovers, those that sideline the ballot and gain power through coups, cannot be compared to democratically elected governments,” he said. “Even with imperfections, a civilian government remains far better than one led by someone wielding a gun.”

He warned that online content, especially videos manipulated using Artificial Intelligence, was being used to portray armed rulers as ideal leaders, including through the use of fake English voice-overs that do not reflect their true communication abilities.

“AI is being used to edit and present these individuals as eloquent leaders, yet in reality, they don't communicate in English. This is a deception aimed at luring the youth into believing that such rule is ideal. Let’s not be fooled those are military regimes, not civilian governments,” he said.

Mudavadi, who also serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, said democracy, even when not perfect, remains the best system for a free and open society. He added that civilian-led governments are built on law, offer room for participation, and protect civil rights.

He pointed out that such systems allow fair decision-making, enable accountability, and build stronger diplomatic ties. On the other hand, military regimes often shut down dissent and operate outside constitutional frameworks.

“Freedom of expression is guaranteed here even those who insult leaders go home safely. That’s not the case in many parts of Africa. Some politicians couldn’t even step outside the airport in neighboring countries. But in Kenya, we talk and move on,” Mudavadi said.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, he urged Kenyans to safeguard democracy by voting and engaging peacefully in the political process.

“We must cherish our democracy. In 2027, Kenyans will once again have the opportunity to decide their leaders through the ballot. Let’s not take this freedom for granted,” he said.

He stressed that development can only thrive in a peaceful environment, calling for respect among leaders and citizens.

“There’s no need for hostility. The ballot will come, and everyone will have their say. Let’s protect the democracy we’ve built and focus on unity, stability, and economic transformation,” he added.
