A prison officer at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes in the UK was seriously injured after an inmate launched a violent attack using an improvised weapon.

The officer had his throat slashed during the shocking incident, but was rushed to the hospital and treated with stitches and surgical glue.

Fortunately, he was discharged later the same day.

The assault is the latest in a series of violent episodes at the high-security facility. In a separate incident at the same prison, another officer was reportedly assaulted by an inmate being held under the Terrorism Act 2008.

However, the Ministry of Justice has stated that neither attack is being treated as terror-related.

These attacks highlight a growing trend of violence in UK prisons.

Recent high-profile incidents include the near-fatal assault on a guard at HMP Frankland by Hashem Abedi, the Manchester Arena bomber's brother, and a boiling water attack on an officer at HMP Belmarsh by convicted killer Axel Rudakubana.

Statistics reveal a disturbing rise in assaults on prison staff, with nearly 30 attacks occurring daily. In the year leading up to September 2024, a total of 10,496 such incidents were recorded.

The Prison Officers Association (POA) has expressed outrage over the increasing violence, criticizing the prison service for inadequate measures to protect its staff and calling for urgent reforms.

In response, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed that it is reviewing security procedures and considering new safety measures, including the deployment of tasers and improved body armour for prison officers, to ensure their safety on the job.
