U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly opposed an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to three American officials who spoke to CBS News, a partner outlet of the BBC.

One of the officials revealed that Trump advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against the move, calling the idea to target Khamenei “unwise.” The president has yet to make a public statement regarding the report.

The discussion is believed to have taken place shortly after Israel initiated a strike against Iran last Friday.

During an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu was asked about a Reuters report claiming Trump had rejected the assassination plan. The Israeli leader neither confirmed nor denied the allegation.

“There are so many false reports about conversations that never actually occurred. I won’t be dragged into that,” Netanyahu said. “What I can say is we do what’s necessary, and I believe the U.S. will always act in its own national interest. That’s all I’m going to say.”

An Israeli official who spoke to CBS News noted that Israel generally refrains from targeting political figures. “Our primary focus remains on nuclear infrastructure and military assets,” the official said. “That said, those running such programs shouldn’t assume they are beyond reach.”

The latest round of hostilities began Friday with Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites. The tit-for-tat escalation between the two countries has entered its third day as of Sunday.

Amid the growing conflict, President Trump took to Truth Social, urging Iran and Israel to negotiate. “Iran and Israel should make a deal,” he posted, suggesting he could mediate a truce just as he claims to have done between India and Pakistan during their past standoff.

Before departing for the G7 summit in Canada, Trump addressed reporters, reaffirming U.S. support for Israel but refused to disclose whether he had requested that Israel halt its attacks on Iran.

Meanwhile, plans for the next round of nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran were abruptly cancelled. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who is acting as a mediator, announced the cancellation on Saturday.

A source familiar with the diplomatic backchannels told Reuters that Iran had informed both Oman and Qatar that it would not enter ceasefire discussions while under continued Israeli bombardment.

Speaking on Saturday, Trump distanced the U.S. from Israel’s military operation, stating, “The United States had no involvement in the strike on Iran.”

He added a firm warning: “If Iran dares to attack us in any form, the full might and force of the U.S. military will strike back with a power never witnessed before.”
