Somalia has secured renewed political and development support from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) following a high-level ministerial meeting in Doha, Qatar.

Officials at the meeting praised the country’s progress in stability, governance, and reform.

The two-day meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Somalia brought together diplomats and development partners from across the Islamic world, with discussions focused on moving from pledges to concrete action.

Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, told the forum that the country had reached several critical milestones.

He noted the transfer of 23 international military bases to Somali control and the training of 20,000 new security personnel.

The minister said this underscores the government’s growing capacity to manage its own national security.

“The level of coordination and alignment coming out of this meeting signals a turning point,” said OIC in a statement after the meeting.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) noted that Somalia is no longer just requesting assistance but offering a structured framework for sustainable partnership.

The delegates at the Doha summit backed Somalia’s long-term development blueprint, known as the National Transformation Plan and Vision 2060.

The plan aims to strengthen infrastructure, drive economic growth, and reduce dependency on external aid.

The meeting also marked the operational launch of the OIC’s Special Fund for Development.

Somalia welcomed the move and proposed a dedicated monitoring mechanism to enhance accountability and ensure measurable impact.

Security remained a central theme during the meeting, and OIC members pledging to support Somalia’s counter-terror efforts through enhanced logistics, surveillance systems, and capacity-building for security forces.

Beyond security, participants highlighted Somalia’s post-debt-relief economic recovery and improving investment climate.

Increased interest was reported in infrastructure, renewable energy, and regional trade projects.

Political reforms such as the federalization process, constitutional review, and preparations for national elections were also commended as signs of resilience.

Somalia Foreign Minister Abdi Ali thanked the State of Qatar for hosting the event and expressed gratitude to OIC member states for their continued solidarity.

“Somalia is on a path to becoming a peaceful, stable, and self-reliant nation,” he said.

“We are building a country that contributes to regional peace and prosperity,” he added.

The outcome of the summit is expected to feed into broader international efforts supporting Somalia’s transition and long-term recovery.
