Opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma announced late Monday that he has won Cameroon’s presidential election held on October 12, urging President Paul Biya to accept the outcome.
Speaking to supporters, Tchiroma said it was time for Biya to “honour the truth of the ballot box” and respect the voters’ decision.
The announcement comes amid heightened tension as Cameroonians await official results from the country’s electoral commission. Tchiroma’s claim directly challenges Biya, who has held power for over four decades, and sets the stage for a potential political standoff.
Tchiroma emphasized that the election reflects the will of the people and called on authorities to ensure transparency in the counting process.
His supporters have taken to the streets in some areas, showing both relief and optimism over the opposition leader’s declaration.
