Citizens of Botswana will now require an entry visa to travel to the United Kingdom (UK), following a new directive announced by the Government of Botswana.
The new requirement took effect on October 14, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of International Relations, the UK Government has revoked the visa-free status previously enjoyed by Botswana nationals.
The change comes in response to what the UK described as increasing cases of illegal and irregular migration, including a rise in asylum applications from Batswana since 2022.
Under the new directive, Botswana nationals travelling to the UK must obtain a visitor visa.
Additionally, those transiting through the UK will be required to secure a direct airside transit visa, effective from the same date.
The UK has, however, introduced a six-week transition period ending on November 25, 2025, to accommodate Batswana who had already booked travel before the policy came into effect.
Those travellers will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure.
“The Government of Botswana wishes to assure the public that through diplomatic channels, it will continue to engage the UK Government on this matter to explore durable solutions that are mutually beneficial for both countries and their citizens,” the ministry said.
The government further encouraged Batswana planning to travel to the UK or any other destination to comply with all immigration laws and regulations of the respective countries.
