A tragic shooting unfolded on April 9, 2025, during a meeting of Memphis Allies, a community violence intervention program aimed at reducing gun violence in the city of Memphis, Tennessee.

The incident, which occurred at a business park on South Mendenhall Road, left one man dead and five others injured.

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Mathew Williams, who was attending the meeting as part of the Memphis Allies program.

Witnesses say the shooting occurred while the group was actively engaged in discussions about ending violence in the city. The gunfire led to chaos as attendees scrambled for safety.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene quickly, but Williams was pronounced dead shortly after paramedics arrived.

Five other individuals were transported to local hospitals.

One victim remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, while the others are expected to recover.

Memphis Allies, which works to help at-risk individuals by offering support and alternatives to a life of violence, expressed their deep sorrow over the tragic incident.

In a statement, the organization said: "We are heartbroken over the senseless act of gun violence that occurred during one of our sessions. Our work to prevent violence in Memphis is more important now than ever."

Local leaders have also spoken out about the tragedy, emphasizing the dangers faced by individuals working on the front lines of anti-violence programs. K. Durell Cowan, founder of the HEAL 901 initiative, remarked, "We understand that we are front-line workers, but this is an unfortunate reminder of the risks that come with trying to change a community."

The Memphis Police Department is investigating the shooting, treating it as an isolated incident.

No arrests have been made, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson for the department confirmed that the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

As Memphis grapples with an ongoing surge in gun violence, the incident highlights the challenges facing community organizations like Memphis Allies, who are working tirelessly to provide solutions and support to those most at risk.

Memphis Allies has pledged to continue their work despite the violence they now find themselves caught in.

The organization remains committed to helping individuals break free from cycles of retaliation and crime.
