The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu to death by hanging after finding him responsible for the death of his wife, renowned gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu.

The ruling, delivered yesterday, marked the end of a legal process that spanned nearly three years.

Osinachi was beloved for her stirring voice and rose to prominence with her feature on the gospel anthem Ekwueme alongside Prospa Ochimana.

Although her death was initially attributed to throat cancer, disturbing revelations from those close to her painted a different picture, one of persistent abuse at the hands of her husband, who also served as a pastor in their church, where Osinachi was the lead singer.

The prosecution, representing the office of the Attorney General, brought forward 17 witnesses and submitted 25 pieces of evidence.

Among the witnesses were the couple’s two eldest children, who testified to their father’s abusive behavior.

The court heard that Peter Nwachukwu routinely exerted control over his wife’s finances, confiscated her earnings, and physically assaulted her when she resisted his dominance.

In a disturbing testimony, one of Osinachi's sons revealed that their father would seize all the money she earned, and any attempt to object would result in physical assault.

He added that their father went as far as preventing her from having a personal bank account, ensuring that all payments from her performances were made directly to him.

One of Osinachi’s sons further described their father’s extreme control, saying he dictated everything—from what she wore and ate to how she spent money.

Multiple witnesses corroborated the abuse, stating that a fatal kick to Osinachi’s chest during one of the violent episodes was the final blow that led to her death.

Out of 23 charges brought against him—including culpable homicide, domestic violence, child abuse, and criminal intimidation- Peter Nwachukwu was convicted on 11 counts.

In addition to the death sentence, the court handed him a combined prison term of 17 years and 6 months for the other convictions, along with fines amounting to ₦700,000 (roughly Sh56,407).

Although the defense appealed for leniency, citing the couple’s four children, the prosecution insisted on the maximum sentence, and the court agreed.

Earlier, Osinachi’s mother revealed that Nwachukwu had deceived the family by posing as a devout pastor to gain their trust and marry her daughter.
