Two robbery suspects arrested in Likoni as police recover firearm
In Summary

Police have submitted the weapon to the National Forensic Laboratory for ballistic tests to determine whether it is linked to any of the reported incidents.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Mariakani in connection with a string of violent robberies in Likoni, as police step up efforts to dismantle criminal gangs operating across Mombasa County.

The suspect was captured during a sting operation by detectives who stormed a guest house room and found a CZ pistol hidden under the bed. Authorities believe the firearm may have been used in several recent attacks in Likoni and neighbouring areas.

Police have submitted the weapon to the National Forensic Laboratory for ballistic tests to determine whether it is linked to any of the reported incidents.

The arrest came just hours after another suspect, described by police as a “serial robber”, was apprehended while hiding in the Maweche area of Likoni. He was arrested by officers from Vijiweni police station following a tip-off from members of the public.

Police said the second suspect is currently out on bail over similar offences that are still pending in court.

“He remains in police custody pending processing and arraignment,” the National Police Service said in a statement, applauding residents for their continued cooperation and vigilance.

The two arrests are being viewed as a breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown targeting criminal gangs that have left residents in fear due to a surge in armed robberies.

Over the past few months, the area has witnessed a rise in attacks targeting pedestrians, boda boda riders, and businesses.

Some of the incidents were captured on CCTV, showing suspects armed with crude weapons and guns.

In April, several arrests were made during similar operations, with some suspects identified as members of the notorious Panga Boys gang, known for broad daylight muggings and robberies.

In response to the growing insecurity, local leaders have launched community initiatives aimed at rehabilitating young people and steering them away from crime. These efforts led to over 100 young men from Likoni surrendering to the police in late June and vowing to abandon criminal activities after attending sensitisation forums.

Police say investigations are ongoing to establish whether the two suspects are linked to other unresolved robbery cases.

Residents have been urged to stay vigilant and continue sharing information with law enforcement to support efforts to restore safety.
