A police officer who shot an unarmed civilian during protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District has been arrested and is set to be charged in court, the National Police Service has said.
The incident, which took place on June 17 near Imenti House, involved an officer firing at close range using an anti-riot shotgun, injuring a man who was reportedly a vendor.
A video of the shooting, which has circulated widely on social media, shows the officer attacking the man before shooting him.
Following public outcry, the Inspector-General ordered the officer’s immediate arrest and arraignment.
“The said police officer has since been arrested,” said NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
The victim was rushed by protesters to Bliss Medical Centre and is currently receiving medical attention.
The NPS also raised concern over the presence of armed groups in the city during the protests.
“NPS has noted a group of goons armed with crude weapons,” Nyaga said, adding that those involved would be “handled firmly, according to the law.”
An investigation is underway to identify the individuals involved in the violence during the protests.
