In a public statement, Kanja said the police will uphold Kenyans’ right to peaceful protest but will not tolerate any actions that breach the law, threaten public safety, or target protected areas.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has defended the National Police Service’s commitment to professionalism, while warning that any unlawful or violent demonstrations will be met with firm action.

In a public statement, Kanja said the police will uphold Kenyans’ right to peaceful protest but will not tolerate any actions that breach the law, threaten public safety, or target protected areas.

Kanja reaffirmed that the police operate independently and are guided by the Constitution.

“The Service is apolitical, with operational independence under the Office of the Inspector General of Police,” he said.

He noted that the Service is held accountable through oversight bodies, including IPOA, the National Police Service Commission, Parliament, and the Internal Affairs Unit. “Every instance of police misconduct is dealt with firmly, swiftly, and transparently,” he stated.

Citing Articles 244 and 37 of the Constitution, the IG said police are required to uphold human rights while ensuring public order. He insisted that any protests must be peaceful and coordinated with the police, in accordance with the Public Order Act. “Any contrary conduct constitutes an unlawful and a riotous assembly,” said Kanja.

The IG reminded the public that protected areas must remain off-limits. He also called on protestors to avoid provoking officers during the execution of their duties.

“The public is also urged to refrain from provocative acts, directed to police officers in execution of their duties,” he said.

While acknowledging past cases of misconduct, Kanja said they are isolated and regrettable, and do not reflect the dedication of the majority of officers.

“We appreciate the patriotism and dedication to duty by all police officers, who put their lives on the line,” he said.

He assured Kenyans that the Service remains focused on dismantling criminal networks and maintaining national security. “We assure the public that we will continue pursuing and dismantling criminal networks, to ensure the safety and security of all Kenyans,” he said.

Kanja urged the public to report any suspicious activity through official channels, promising that such information would be handled confidentially.

“Kenya is our homeland. Let us protect it. We only have this country,” he concluded.
