Operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were temporarily suspended on Thursday morning, October 16, following a major security breach during the arrival of the body of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed the closure, citing an ongoing “security situation” after thousands of mourners gained access to restricted areas within the airport.

In an official statement, KCAA Director General Emile N. Arao said the suspension was a precautionary move to safeguard passengers, airport staff, and the public.

“Operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have been temporarily suspended due to an ongoing security situation following the arrival of the remains of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga,” Arao stated.

He explained that “a large number of mourners gained access to restricted areas, prompting a precautionary closure to allow security teams to restore order and ensure safety.” Arao further urged calm, advising that “members of the public and travelers are advised to remain calm and avoid the airport area until further notice.”

According to the statement, normal operations are expected to resume once security agencies have fully restored order at the facility.

“Normal operations will resume once the airport is declared secure in the next two hours. A NOTAM of the same has been issued,” the KCAA boss added.

The temporary suspension disrupted several flights, with some passengers reporting delays and diversions to alternative airports such as Wilson Airport and Moi International Airport in Mombasa. Security forces, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), police, and National Youth Service (NYS) personnel, were deployed to contain the situation and manage the surging crowd of mourners.

“The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority regrets any inconvenience and appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation,” Arao said, emphasizing that the authority’s priority remains the safety and security of all airspace users.

The arrival of Raila Odinga’s body drew massive crowds at JKIA and along major roads in Nairobi, underscoring the profound national grief and admiration for the late statesman.
