Boda boda riders in Bungoma County have undergone first aid training to enhance their emergency response skills.

The training focused on road safety, was conducted by Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Bungoma in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross and St. John's Ambulance.

The initiative aims to improve road safety and minimize accident-related fatalities.

Area MP John Makali emphasized its significance in enhancing overall safety on the roads, saying boda boda operators frequently arrive at accident scenes before emergency responders, making their ability to provide immediate aid essential.

He highlighted that the training equips them with lifesaving skills, helping to minimize injury severity before medical teams intervene.

KMTC Bungoma Principal, Victoria Koi, emphasized the program’s significance, pointing out that many road accident fatalities occur during the critical window between the crash and hospital arrival.

This training comes at a critical moment, as boda boda riders have become a dominant force on Kenya’s roads.

Once operating in the shadows of matatu drivers and conductors, they are now among the most prominent figures navigating highways and city streets.

Meshack Wenani, one of the participants, expressed his appreciation for the program.

“We now have greater confidence in handling emergencies and providing assistance at accident scenes. We hope for more training sessions to further sharpen our skills,” he said.
