The Judiciary of Kenya is in mourning following the death of Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, a distinguished Judge of the Court of Appeal.
Chief Justice Martha Koome, in a solemn statement, paid tribute to Justice Ochieng, describing him as a “towering figure” in Kenya’s legal community and a key contributor to the development of commercial law.
The Chief Justice, who also serves as Chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission, expressed her heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire Judiciary.
She said, “On behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission, I convey with profound sadness the news of the passing of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary during this time of great sorrow.”
Justice Ochieng began his legal career in 2003 as a High Court Judge and served in various judicial divisions and stations across Kenya.
His career spanned nearly two decades, and he was highly regarded for his exceptional legal insight, fairness, and commitment to justice. He served in the Civil Division, Kitale, Kakamega, the Criminal Division, the Commercial and Admiralty Division, and Kisumu, where he earned a reputation for handling complex cases with thoroughness and diligence.
In 2022, his vast experience and exceptional service led to his elevation to the Court of Appeal, where he continued to influence the development of Kenyan law.
He was especially known for his contributions to commercial law, having presided over significant cases that shaped the nation's legal landscape.
His judgments remain key reference points for practitioners, scholars, and fellow judges.
In addition to his role as a judge, Justice Ochieng was deeply committed to judicial reforms, particularly in the area of alternative dispute resolution.
At the time of his death, he was serving as Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, which was instrumental in rolling out mediation programs aimed at reducing the backlog of cases in Kenyan courts.
This initiative sought to provide more timely, affordable, and less adversarial ways to resolve disputes.
“He will be fondly remembered as a strong advocate for the promotion of alternative dispute resolution,” the Judiciary’s tribute read.
“His leadership in court-annexed mediation is a lasting legacy of his belief that justice must be timely, accessible, and people-centered.”
Before joining the judiciary, Justice Ochieng had an accomplished career in private practice, serving for nearly 20 years at Kaplan & Stratton Advocates, one of Kenya's leading law firms.
His extensive experience in corporate law, commercial transactions, and litigation enriched his legal approach, which he carried into his role as a judge.
His colleagues in the legal profession remember him not only for his intellectual rigor but also for his humility and mentorship.
He was known as a meticulous lawyer and a principled individual who was passionate about guiding younger professionals in the field.
The legal community has been united in mourning Justice Ochieng’s passing, praising his work, leadership, and commitment to justice.
The Judiciary has called for compassion and respect during this period of grief, with Chief Justice Koome stating, “We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and the entire Judiciary community during this difficult period of mourning. May Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng’s soul rest in eternal peace.”
Justice Ochieng leaves behind a legacy of excellence in the legal profession, particularly in commercial law and alternative dispute resolution. His contributions will continue to influence the Kenyan judiciary and legal practices for many years to come.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced and will be shared in consultation with the Judiciary.
