Dualling of 20km Northern Bypass gets cabinet nod

The Northern Bypass remains the only Nairobi bypass that is still a single carriageway, a situation that has led to constant traffic jams, long travel times, and frequent accidents.
The government has approved the dualling of the 20.2-kilometre Nairobi Northern Bypass, paving the way for a major upgrade of the key transport corridor that connects Ruaka to Ruiru through Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
The Cabinet, chaired by President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi, said the move aims to ease traffic flow, improve road safety, and enhance access to key industrial zones and economic hubs.
The Northern Bypass remains the only Nairobi bypass that is still a single carriageway, a situation that has led to constant traffic jams, long travel times, and frequent accidents.
The new project will convert the road into a dual carriageway and introduce eight interchanges, overpasses, and underpasses to better manage traffic volumes.
The upgrade will also include non-motorised transport features such as walkways and cycle paths to ensure safety for all road users.
Drainage systems along the route will be improved, and adjacent roads will be enhanced to support the expanded network.
Stretching from Ruaka and linking with both the Eastern and Western bypasses, the road plays a vital role in connecting residents, goods, and services between Nairobi and Kiambu.
Once complete, the dualling is expected to reduce traffic congestion, boost productivity, and improve access to essential services.
