During the Friday court session, prosecutor Vane Mochama requested that investigators be allowed 21 days to conclude their probe.

A Nyamira court has ordered two suspects linked to the killing of a 20-year-old woman to remain in custody for three weeks as investigations continue.

Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochieng directed that Gideon Makori, also known as Giddy, and Vinic Kemunto be detained at Nyamira Police Station until September 29, when the matter will be mentioned in court.

The two were arrested on Wednesday evening in Nairobi’s Huruma Estate after detectives recovered remains believed to belong to the young woman, who had been missing for over a month.

Faith Kemunto, who was expected to join university next month, disappeared from her parents’ home on July 30. According to prosecutors, Gideon, the first suspect, was the last person seen with her before she went missing.

He is accused of leading family members to a site in Maosi village, where the remains of the missing woman were buried.

The body was exhumed on Thursday by homicide detectives and moved to the Nyamira referral mortuary, where it is awaiting post-mortem and DNA confirmation.

During the Friday court session, prosecutor Vane Mochama requested that investigators be allowed 21 days to conclude their probe.

“The investigating officer needs time to record statements of key witnesses from the family of the prime suspect and the family of the late Kemunto,” she told the court.

“This matter is in connection with a court order that was given to exhume a body that is believed to be hers. The body was exhumed yesterday as per the orders and is lying at Nyamira referral mortuary awaiting post mortem and possible DNA tests," she explained further.

The prosecution also revealed that Gideon had been evading arrest until he was traced to the house of Vinic, the second suspect, in Nairobi. Granting the request, Magistrate Ochieng ruled: “Having considered this application, I will allow the investigators the said number of days to conclude their investigations. The two will be held at Nyamira Police Station and the mention date will be on September 29, 2025.”
