Former CJ Maraga consulting over calls to run for presidency

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has responded to calls from Gen Z urging him to run for the presidency, stating that he is in consultation with various stakeholders over the matter.
Speaking after delivering a public lecture at Rongo University in Migori County on Thursday, Maraga acknowledged the request and assured that he would announce his decision in due time.
"I have received the request and am engaging with different stakeholders. Once I reach a conclusion, I will make it public, and we will see how things unfold," said Maraga in an interview with the Star.
The former CJ emphasized the importance of understanding both the power and responsibilities that come with an elective position.
He stressed that anyone aspiring for such a role must be committed to serving in line with the demands of the office.
Maraga also expressed his readiness to serve, pointing to his track record during his time in the Judiciary.
"I was head of one arm of government. There is no magic about being a head of another arm of government," he said.
He expressed a deep understanding of the challenges Kenyans face, emphasizing that corruption remains the nation’s biggest obstacle.
“The primary issue in this country is corruption, both budgeted and institutional. It has not been tackled effectively, and as a result, Kenya lacks the necessary resources to address critical problems,” he stated.
Maraga further encouraged the youth to take an active role in governance, urging them to embrace their civic responsibilities and advocate for accountability and good leadership.
"I challenge each of you to be defenders of justice and accountability. Stand boldly against a system that seeks to exploit young minds for the benefit of political cartels," said Maraga.
