HELB eases diaspora repayment with online platform

HELB announced that the process has been simplified through the use of the WorldRemit platform.
Kenyans living and working abroad can now repay their Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans from any location in the world, following the launch of a global repayment option.
HELB announced that the process has been simplified through the use of the WorldRemit platform, giving borrowers a straightforward way to settle their student loans while living overseas.
In a statement issued on Thursday, HELB released a detailed guide showing how loan beneficiaries can make their payments using the WorldRemit service.
"Wherever in the world you may be, we have made it easier for you to make an impact back home. Here is how to pay your HELB loan via WorldRemit," the statement read.
To begin, one is required to log in to www.worldremit.com and select the Bank Deposit option.
The user must also choose the preferred currency between United States Dollars (USD) and Kenyan Shillings.
The next step is to enter the amount to be paid and designate Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) account number 1103266314 as the recipient.
Payments should be made using either a debit or credit card, and the sender’s national ID number must be included as a reference.
Once the transaction is complete, borrowers are instructed to forward the confirmation email to HELB.
This should be sent to either of the two official email addresses provided by the agency—[email protected] or [email protected].
While the focus of the latest announcement is on the diaspora, HELB also reminded Kenyans within the country that loan repayment methods have been modernised as well.
The agency said that local payments can now be done through the eCitizen payment gateway, allowing both individuals and employers to make contributions via checkoff systems.
For those paying individually, HELB has made three repayment options available. These include the HELB Mobile App, the official HELB online portal, and the USSD code *642#.
In addition to those digital platforms, HELB has provided other channels through which payments can be made, including various banks and well-known mobile money services. This offers borrowers a range of convenient options to clear their outstanding loans.
The agency further noted that it occasionally offers attractive discounts to borrowers who may have accrued penalties over time.
These discounts are mainly applied when borrowers opt to clear their balances in bulk.
