DCI probes fatal shooting of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu in Nairobi

Security footage reviewed by investigators shows the shooter and his motorcycle rider trailing Mbobu’s car from Galleria Mall before executing the attack
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has launched a detailed investigation into the shocking murder of prominent lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, who was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on Lang'ata Road in Nairobi on Tuesday evening.
According to police, Mbobu was ambushed around 5:30 pm while driving alone to his home in Bogani, Karen. He was shot at close range through the window of his four-wheel-drive vehicle, which was stuck in traffic near Brookhouse School.
The assailant, armed with a pistol, walked up to the driver’s side and opened fire, hitting the lawyer at least three times in the chin and head.
After the shooting, Mbobu’s car lurched forward and collided with a matatu as nearby passengers scrambled for cover.
Police recovered three spent cartridges at the scene.
Nothing was stolen from the vehicle, reinforcing suspicions that the killing was a carefully planned hit.
Security footage reviewed by investigators shows the shooter and his motorcycle rider trailing Mbobu’s car from Galleria Mall before executing the attack.
The gunman, after carrying out the shooting, quickly ran back to the waiting motorcycle.
When a group of boda boda riders attempted to pursue them, the gunman fired twice into the air, dispersing the crowd before they sped off toward the city centre.
"After securing the scene, detectives from the DCI Homicide Bureau, supported by experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, carefully examined the scene and collected critical evidence essential to the investigations,” the DCI said in a statement.
The directorate said that it is fully committed to ensuring the people behind the killing are brought to justice.
“Our investigators are working diligently, employing all available resources and expertise to piece together the events surrounding this incident,” it added.
The DCI has urged members of the public with any information that could help in the case to come forward. Information can be shared confidentially through the toll-free number 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
“We appeal for calm during this challenging time and request the public's cooperation as we work to resolve this case,” the statement continued.
“We are determined to provide the justice that Lawyer Kyalo Mbobu and his loved ones deserve.”
The directorate also sent its condolences to Mbobu’s family, friends, and colleagues during what it described as a difficult time.
"More details on the progress of the investigation will be shared with the public when appropriate," DCI said.
