This development also represents a major advancement in reinforcing the country's national health security framework.
The Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, has officially inaugurated the Kenya National Public Health Institute (KNPHI), a pivotal move towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by strengthening preventive and promotive healthcare services.
This development also represents a major advancement in reinforcing the country's national health security framework.
KNPHI, established under Legal Notice No. 14 of 2022, is intended to serve as the central body for disease monitoring, health research, policy coordination, and swift emergency response.
It seeks to optimize public health operations, minimize duplication among institutions, and strengthen the nation's ability to quickly address emerging health threats.
During the launch event, CS Duale emphasized the importance of building strong, resilient institutions to effectively address modern public health challenges.
He acknowledged the vital role played by the World Bank, Africa CDC, Amref Health Africa, and the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), highlighting their essential technical and financial contributions toward the establishment of the institute.
Duale also urged the Public Service Commission to prioritize the swift approval of key human resource frameworks, ensuring the institute is well-staffed and fully operational.
Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo, WHO's Country Representative, reaffirmed WHO's continued commitment to supporting Kenya in creating a robust, independent public health institute that aligns with both national goals and global health standards.
The launch event was graced by a diverse group of dignitaries and stakeholders, including Principal Secretaries Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno (Environment and Climate Change), Health Committee Chair Dr. James Nyikal from the National Assembly, and Council of Governors CEO Mary Mwiti.
